One helluva run

Well, first let me start off by saying that Kari and I have grit.  We ran 5 miles in 27 degree weather in Stevens Point and damn, it was fun!  The longest mileage I had logged to date was 3.35 or so, but I made the jump to 5 today and it felt somewhat easy.  Crazy to say that, but I was faster after the split.  That right there is a little bit of victory for this girl.

Anyway, I started off dabbling with the Cellcom training plan in Jan. but didn't get as far as I should have.  Linz, you are kicking running ass right now.  Anyway, Hal Higdon came out with a Novice 2 plan for half marathoners, so I have jumped ship and over to Hal's plan.  I like it...running 4 days a week...it should be good.

Now as for today, I PRed!!!!  I ran at 10:41 pace for the Point Bock Run, but truth be told, I was faster after the split.  At the 3 mile marker my time was 33 something (minus 1:30 because that is what the clock said when Kari and I finally crossed the mat to begin) and then I was at 44 something when I hit 4 miles.  At the last .15 or so I picked up the pace and hit the finish line feeling great.  So, I have a few conclusions as a result:

1)  My new pre-race routine will include Alterra coffee, their ham and cheese croissant, a thermos of Simply Orange orange/pineapple juice and a half of a PB sammy.

2)  Janice's knit purple hat and mittens are my new cold weather running accessories of choice.

3)  I am convinced that the two "Leathal Weapon" shots that I drank last night while waiting for food at Matt and my favorite corner bar sealed the night-before-the-race deal.  I didn't order them - the bartender talked me into the first one because it was her invention and then the 2nd one someone at the bar bought for a few people.  In any case, it was delicious - Rumchata and coffee flavored tequila.  Yum.

4)  Roark is a rock star running partner.  I really think all his pulling and wanting to go faster when we run is why I hit the ground as a faster version of myself today.  He gets a special treat for that!  :)  Too bad doggies weren't allowed in the race.

5)  Kari is a great person to run and then debrief a race with.  Awesome job today, Kari!  Way to execute your plan - we made a huge mileage jump today!  Let's celebrate with steak and shrimp in Milw. soon!

6)  Pete will make you steak if you run a race near their house.  Wow, what a way to cap off the day!  Thanks, Pete and Carla!  And thanks to Dan for the after lunch ice cream treat!

Okay, off to play with the doggie.  I think I still have a runners high!  :)

Thanks to all of you for being such great inspiration.  Harry, I might be able to pull off the 10 minute pace yet for the Cellcom!

Jan 9-14

I am 100% of of those people who turns to physical activity when I'm stressed or working through a particular problem. I have solved interpersonal crises and had eureka moments while out running too many times to count. I think my office should set up a kickboxing gym to help my productivity.

So I had all kinds of shit to work out this week - we had to withdraw an exhibit sponsorship proposal ($100,000) due to a conflict with an existing sponsor, which was the ethical, right-relationship move, but still sucked; someone at work pissed me off royally (see: kickboxing gym). To top it all off, our car died Wednesday and needs $500 worth of repairs, right before the planned trip to WI this weekend for Erich and KT's baby shower. So I'm bummed about missing la familia this weekend on top of work and financial stress. Tomorrow is 4 miles, so I think Sam and I will head out for a nice, hard, get-through-your-personal-shit run. Throw a nice hill in there for good measure.

This week's log:
Jan 9: 2.5 miles with Sam
Jan 11: 3.6 miles after work
Jan 12: 2 miles plus 80 minutes of DDPP (I ran there and back, since the car is broken and it was cold and running gets you places faster than walking).
Jan 14: Planning on 4 mi.

LB running log Jan 1-8. And food.

My runs this week:
Jan 1: 1.75 miles to Target and back to exchange some items. Mostly I wanted to get out and do something after the long drive home from Wisconsin.
Jan 3: 2.5 miles after work with Sam. The sidewalks were icy in parts, but mostly clear. I run downtown specifically because they clear the sidewalks better than the residential neighborhoods.
Jan 4: 2.5 miles after work on a trail by work. I have a standup desk at work, so usually my legs are pretty tired at the end of the day. I think it's good practice to run on tired legs. Plus when I run after work, I get to change at work and show off my cool running clothes.* If only I could wear them all the time.

*Not as exciting as I'm making it sound. I actually feel kind of awkward changing into my running clothes there but you gotta do what you gotta do.

Jan 5: Dance Dance Party Party for 80 minutes. It was bumpin'.
Jan 8: 4.25 miles with Sam. My left knee was a tad sore during the run, but it's better now. Sam usually pushes the pace when we run, since he could sprint for ever and ever and ever and I, unfortunately, cannot. Usually it's pretty good because I'm going faster than I would by myself, but I'm still working on figuring out the right speed to maintain on a bit longer run.

Overall, not huge mileage but good consistency compared to what I'd been doing in Oct/Nov/beginning of December. Around then I could feel the impact of running only once a week - I was squishier and losing my base fitness so I've been deliberately making an effort to get out more days per week.

Sometimes I go running with Sam in the morning before work and I took this picture of him a few weeks ago:

It's his best Rudolph/don't-get-hit-by-a-car-look.

I also made this dal palak recipe yesterday, which was delicious. If you want to attempt some homemade Indian food, this is a good recipe to try.

Bacher out.

2012 Cellcom Training

As one of our running buddies said yesterday, we now have a new purpose. Running for the sake of running is great, but having a goal adds a little more discipline and helps one lace up the shoes when pulled in other directions.

This year I will be leading a pace group for the half marathon. Though I have always strived to better my time each race, I have come to grips with the fact that faster is not always better (alright for those who know me, I am not really convinced of that......). I am thinking it will be fun to pace a group of runners trying to meet or exceed their goals rather than me trying to beat my best time. The pace group that I will be leading is the 2:10 group, which is about a 9:55 minute / mile.

Like last year I will run the marathon training distances up to about 14 or 16 miles. That seems to be the point my body is telling me to stop. I am contemplating running a 1/2 marathon before the Cellcom for time, but we will see. Hmmmm, maybe a destination 1/2. We will see.

Today, Patti and I will get a run in Florida where we can run in shorts and short sleeve shirts. Looking forward to it even though yesterday's run in Green Bay was great at 30 ish degrees.

Happy Running.

Cellcom training in GB started today

Today was the first day of the Cellcom group training here in Green Bay.  Harry and I along with hundreds of our running buds were there to start things out.  I'm following the official Cellcom training plan and I ran 3 on Thursday and 3 on Friday, then today was a 5 miler.  So far on target, however I have to get better at going MY pace and not faster than my comfort zone while I chat with friends who are faster than me.  My goal at this point is 10 min. miles for 26.2 miles.

Oh yeah, and after the run I went and used a gift certificate at Run Away shoes that Pastor Greg & Kerry gave me and I got much needed new shoes!  Can't wait to try them out tomorrow in Florida where I am headed for a couple days because I am on holiday!

Happy training!

Patti

Training has begun!

Familia,

I did some yoga tonight to ease into training!  I feel great!  Also, Linz mentioned that the Cellcom training regimen is up and running, so I went ahead and changed my password so that she - and any of you - can create new posts for our blog.  I'll send sign in and password information to you guys in a separate E-mail.  Stay tuned.  :)

Also, I have registered for the 2012 Bravado Challenge.  Got Bravado?!  Prove it!  :)  Check out the site at www.bravadochallenge.org  I'm on the planning committee, it's a great first triathlon experience, and it's low key...I promise!  It'd be a great way to kick off June, get pumped for the Bellin and start the Patti-and-Harry-are-getting-hitched partaaaaay!

Happy New Year!

Everyone,

So, I have been saying that we should start a running blog in the family because so many people are doing the running thing these days.  That, I must say, is kick ass!  Anyway, being a non-FaceSpacer at this point, I thought this could be a cool hub for all of us to share what we're doing, how our training is going, etc.  Here is it!  I am open to suggestions for additions and such, but in the meantime, feel free to post away.   I plan to get starting with some light training this week right away, so I'll check back in a day or two.

Happy running!
